As you get older, there are certain conditions that tend to be a little bit more common upon reaching the postmenopausal stage. One of them is lichen sclerosus.
This is a term for a condition of patchy skin that is whiter and lighter than the surrounding skin. It’s a general skin condition that can happen anywhere on your body, but most often found around the vulva or skin near the anus. The risk is higher among women in postmenopause, but it can happen to people of any age.
Symptoms can include:
- itching
- pain, sometimes during intercourse
- bleeding
- blisters
- white spots or blotches on the skin
The cause for this is believed to be a hormonal imbalance or an autoimmune condition. It’s not contagious and it tends to go away on its own without medical treatment. Of course, this isn’t the case for everyone, and there are certain creams that are applied to the skin that can be prescribed by a doctor if the condition doesn’t seem to be getting better.
As it may be a hormonal issue, a doctor that can provide patients with guidance and help with their hormones may be a good place for advice and treatment.
